Will You Preach this Way in 20 Years?

I recently ran across this video when someone in my network put it on twitter. I have to admit it is one of the most fascinating 4 minute video’s I’ve seen.

Here is a great question for you to consider – would this be an effective preaching / delivery method?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

  1. Derek McCosh Says:

What type of technology is he using? Is that some sort of hologram?

  2. Chris Says:

Would be neat if that was actually possible. I wonder whether that was a computer overlay after the fact, though, and would make it impossible to see that type of effect if you were there live.

  3. Joel Southerland Says:

@ Derek – I don’t actually kw. I didn’t inquire because I knew it would be terrible expensive as of now.
@ Chris – Chris it might be that you could be standing behind a very large clear monitor. And, a lot of pastors with satellite campus’ use DVD’s to play at the satellites. It might could work that way.

And, it might not be the whole sermon. Maybe just a part…

    Interesting ideas though….

And I thought it was pretty good progress to take off my choker (tie) and use a powerpoint…of course, in the north Georgia mountains, that IS pretty radical. But this kind of thing will be available, since technology constantly gets stronger and cheaper. We BETTER be thinking how to use it.
I remember my old preaching professor telling the story about his homiletics professor being asked, “How many points should a sermon have?” and answering “At least one.”
We are probably approaching the day when an effective sermon will really have just one point…and we might preach multiple sermons within a worship setting, interspersed with music, other media, drama, etc.

    Cool stuff!

As to what type of equipment he was using…I don’t think he was using any new or extravagant technology. From the camera and computer setup he walked past in the video it appeared they used simple layer technology. I doubt the speaker could see the graph as he spoke, it was probably inserted over the video with a tech team making sure his hands are lining up. It’s like a movie filmed in front of a green screen, but in this case, no green screen. But, I don’t think it was rendered live either. It was probably edited after the fact. Too precise, too smooth and the color is too nice.

To do it live, the “tech” team would have to have a solid spatial idea as to the marks/points the speaker is aiming for and the speaker would have to have an idea as to the parameters of where the tech team will be overlaying the graphics. Also the graphics would have to be ready ahead of time…which would mean word for word/timed out perfection from the speaker.

Daydreaming though, I would love to see this with a parable or a very visual section of scripture…could you imagine preaching but the screen (which you would need) doesn’t simply show you at a pulpit…it shows you standing in the Garden of Gethsemane next to a man praying with his back to us. It could be very, very powerful…

Application of minister in suit and tie (work with me here) and suffering Christ in real life. Then asking what should reality look like? The church service (suit and tie)? The video (but it’s fake, right)? Ooohh. Could be so much fun.

I thought it was great – a graphic illustration that is simple to follow and easy to understand. Perfect for websites or DVD tracts. not really practical for live though – although you could record a segment and overlay the graphs or whatever to show a short illustrative video…

  7. David Says:

    To Derek McCosh,

The holographic was created using a program like Motion (Apple) or After Effects (Adobe). The script was choreographed and executed extremely well.

David, you are right by saying it’s not any exrtavagant technology, simply a sophisticated one.

Leanr more about this kind of technology at my website below, if you’re interested.

    Cheers!
